Grand Re-Opening Ceremony of President Lincoln's Cottage

A grand re-opening ceremony was held for President Lincoln's Cottage at the President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home National Monument as part of the beginning of the two-year celebration of the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth on February 12, 1809. Speakers described Lincoln's presidency during the civil war. They also described the 34-room house 3 miles north of the White House that served as a summer retreat for the Lincoln family during the Civil War, 1862-1864. President Lincoln lived there for approximately one-fourth of his presidency. The restoration by the National Trust for Historic Preservation also was described.

The day before the official dedication of the museum portion of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, museum officials talked about the museum and resources available to both the public and scholars. Richard Norton Smith conducted a tour of several of the exhibits that would open to the public highlighting President Lincoln's life and presidency. Additionally, several winners of a C-SPAN sponsored student essay contest talked about their winning entries and what they had learned as a result of their work and a week-long tour of Illinois. Some video clips of their trip were shown. Telephone lines were open throughout the program for viewer comments and questions about President Lincoln and the museum. In the first part of the telecast telephone lines were also open for viewer comments on news of the day.

Participants talked about the legacy of President Lincoln and dedicated a new presidential library in Springfield, Illinois. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library is part of a larger building project that will also incorporate a presidential museum. The event featured speeches by lawmakers, video remarks from President Bush, and people reading the Gettysburg Address.

On the anniversary of President Lincoln's birth, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The groundbreaking itself was shown briefly, followed by a ceremony and speeches in the National City Bank building. Music was provided by the Union Baptist Church Choir and the Springfield Children's Choir. Ms. Payne served as master of ceremonies.

In the sixteenth in a series on American presidents, the life and career of Abraham Lincoln were discussed. Mr. Long and Professor Medford talked about Lincoln's election as the first Republican president. Ms. Suits and Mr. Townsend talked about Lincoln's home and the artifacts in it. ~ Mr. Davis talked about Lincoln's law practice. During the program a high school student was interviewed about his knowledge of President Lincoln and the guests responded to audience telephone calls. Long is the author of, The Jewel of Liberty.
