Mr. Holzer talked about his book, Lincoln at Cooper Union: The Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President, published by Simon and Schuster. In his remarks he talked about the importance of the speech, sectionalism, the issue of slavery and abolition in the antebellum era. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.

In Mr. Lincoln's famous address, Mr. Lincoln argued against the spread of slavery to the Western states. Harold Holzer described the culture that produced the speech, Lincoln's presidential campaign, and the speech's impact. Mr. Holzer introduced Sam Waterston's presentation. Actor Sam Waterston delivered Abraham Lincoln's Cooper Union Address in the Great Hall of Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, where it was originally delivered on February 27, 1860.

In an interview aired prior to the lecture, Ms. Stiverson explained the connection between the Supreme Court and the Law Library of Congress. Justice O'Connor introduced a lecture on "Taney, Lincoln, and the Constitutional Convention" by Professor Palundun. He focused on the Dred Scott case and the stakes of the Civil War in constitutional terms.

While a member of the Illinois legislature, Lincoln delivered his now-famous "House Divided" speech in which he said that the United States must not be divided into two separate republics. Brian Lamb introduced R. Frederick Klein, an historical interpreter, who re-enacted Lincoln's speech.
