LBJ White House Tapes Past Programs

 
 
Hear some of President Lyndon Johnson’s phone calls from July and early August, 1964, as LBJ gets ready for the Democratic National Convention at the end of August. In addition to campaign issues, the president and his advisers discuss the poverty and Medicare bills and foreign policy. You’ll hear LBJ talk to Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, aides Bill Moyers and Douglass Cater and Florida Senator George Smathers. He also gets advice from longtime friends James Rowe, an attorney and James Farley, postmaster general under Franklin Roosevelt.

In this special program, we’ll take you back to November 22nd, 1963: The day President John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. You’ll hear air traffic communications with Air Force One from that afternoon. Then, some of the earliest calls made by Lyndon Johnson as president, as he considers the possible economic and social repercussions of the assassination, an address to Congress and the nation and putting lawmakers to work on key Kennedy measures, including education, tax and civil rights bills.

Participants include cabinet members and key senators and two attorneys who are long-time Johnson advisers.
