WATCH"MY STORY" ON WASHINGTON JOURNAL
4/01/04: WASHINGTON, DC

In the most general, most comprehensive sense, C-SPAN has enriched my life by perfectly complementing my formal education. As a teacher of both science and English, my studies were, naturally, in those fields. C-SPAN - for more than two decades - has filled gaps which existed in my knowledge of history and increased my appreciation of the political process.

Whether through mornings with Washington Journal, Sunday evenings with Booknotes, a trip to Chateau de Tocqueville, briefings by N.A.S.A. scientists or Brian Lamb querying the Librarian of Congress about the number of hair samples catalogued, the "Mission" has touched me everyday.

More than that, I have become active in my community beyond the classroom. I began a salon group which has lasted over seven years. I helped found a local Friends of the Library organization. In 2002, I became chairman of the board of trustees for our museum in Massillon - a small Erie Canal town founded in 1826 and named for French priest Jean-Baptiste Massillon.

I became interested enough in my own family history to write a memoir for my son (Before I Go, ISBN 1-4134-0330-1) and research my late father's ancestors in Ohio and West Virginia. Over the years, I have acquired all the books by and about C-SPAN, participated in the Tocqueville essay contest, collected the bookmarks, and spent fifteen seconds in Mr. Lamb's Booknotes chair during a tour. I have even written two presidents to nominate your C.E.O for a Medal of Freedom.

Thanks to all of you.
