C-SPAN 25TH ANNIVERSARY STORY WINNERS

Marian Sowle
Richland Center, Wisconsin
Cable Company: Charter Communications

After viewing C-SPAN, I got interested in legislative issues and joined an AARP chapter. I was Legislative Chairperson for several years and President now.

In 1988, I wrote, "Thank You" to C-SPAN. A surprise! C-SPAN called and interviewed me, concerning my "telephone tree" for the C-SPAN Update newspaper, March 26, 1988 issue.

C-SPAN and my "telephone tree" go hand in hand. I activate my, "telephone tree" and alert seniors, C-SPAN is airing legislative issue concerning them. Tune in.

During my interview I said, "I don't know what I'd do without C-SPAN. I tape legislation issues aired on C-SPAN and we view the tapes at our meetings. I think C-SPAN is a necessary part of every voter's education process to know our government."

C-SPAN and my "telephone tree" helped our chapter receive the 2002 Myrtle Parker Significant Achievement Award. Quote in the AARP Volunteer Chat May 2003 newsletter, "Marian Sowle's C-SPAN telephone tree is just one of the many ways the Richland Chapter excels at keeping members in touch with advocacy issues."

The November 2003 AARP Volunteer Chat newsletter says, "As many of your know Marian and her husband Lawrence are tireless C-SPAN viewers. Like AARP members everywhere they've been following the process of Medicare RX legislation."

In January 2004, I still don't know what I'd do without C-SPAN as a necessary part of every voters education process to know our government and vote accordingly.
