C-SPAN 25TH ANNIVERSARY STORY WINNERS

David McBride
Tulsa, Oklahoma

It is difficult to describe in 250 words the influence C-SPAN has had upon my professional development. In the early 1990's I was a committed varsity basketball coach and an average classroom teacher. A colleague encouraged me to watch Booknotes sparking an interest in reading non-fiction. Doris Kearns Goodwin's "No Ordinary Time," Stephen Ambrose's "D-Day," and David McCullough's "Truman" became early favorites. This evolved into a profound interest in reading non-fiction that today permeates my classroom, stimulating my students.

This C-SPAN influence has resulted in academic achievements and an evolution of professional interests that continues to astound my colleagues. In 1997 I stopped coaching varsity basketball. By 2001, my peers had voted me "Teacher of the Year." I was selected as a C-SPAN Teaching Fellow this past summer.

At this time, I have in my collection of videotape every Booknotes program since 2000, the American Presidents programming, the American Writers series as well as most of the In Depth interviews. This allows almost daily use of C-SPAN programming in my classroom that has led to the most rewarding aspect of my association with C-SPAN; my students are involved. They have participated on call-in programs, have emailed featured authors and are currently communicating with Eric Schlosser as they are reading his book "Fast Food Nation" and "Reefer Madness." C-SPAN has placed historians in my classroom and breathed life into historical figures. While anchors grow weary of hearing this phrase, thank you for C-SPAN!
