In 1997 while working at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington, I was inspired to start the "Book Club" - an executive mentoring program for young African American males who were employed by the company. The club focused on leadership lessons from biographies that were featured on Booknotes. Six years later the group still meets once per month and many members have been promoted to higher levels of management with Microsoft and other prominent technology-based firms.

Another inspiration that came directly from the program was the creation of a graduate-level course at Seattle University entitled "Extraordinary Leaders."

In 1998, I watched a Booknotes interview with Professor Howard Gardner on his (then) new book "Extraordinary Minds." At the time I was vaguely familiar with his work on multiple intelligences and was fascinated by his analysis. I subsequently purchased a copy and began reading, outlining it in earnest. I wanted to see if I could garner support for teaching a class on the topic. (At the time I had never taught a university course before, so the idea of starting one from scratch around this topic was daunting indeed.)

This led to development of the course that has become one of the most highly rated and popular on campus. (It has been oversubscribed since its inception.) The students are learning principles of extraordinary performance and are encouraged to incorporate them into their daily lives.

Had it not been for Booknotes, both the Book Club and the Extraordinary Leaders course would not have happened.
