A few years ago I was taking a US history course. I never enjoyed politics and knew nothing about it. One day not too long after I had a lesson on Plessy v. Ferguson, I saw Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas talking about the case on C-SPAN. I had no idea who he was and what his ideology was about. Nonetheless, it was interesting to see a black Supreme Court Justice articulating his views on a landmark civil rights case. Later I started discovering and watching more C-SPAN programs that really educated me. Many major events happened since then--the 2000 election, the 9/11 attack, the death of Paul Wellstone, and the recent Democratic presidential campaigns. I became a bona fide C-SPANite and also became more involved in politics. I am currently a volunteer editor for OnTheIssues.org, a 20-million-viewership non-partisan website that analyzes political stances of hundreds of politicians and promotes voter efficacy and awareness. In addition, I'm determined to pursue my Ph.D. degree in political economy upon finishing my undergraduate studies. C-SPAN has indeed made a huge impact on me. I would have never thought about getting into politics as a young college freshman. But the goals in my life have changed a great deal since that random occasion I came across C-SPAN. I strongly believe C-SPAN has affected the lives of many people who made the commitment to dedicate themselves to a lifetime of public service. I feel lucky to be one of them.
