Mohammad Khan
New York City, New York
Cable Company: Time Warner

My name is Mohammad Khan. I was born in Pakistan. When I was about 12 year old, I moved to the USA. I moved to the United States of America to live a better life. When I started schooling here I had to face so many difficulties.

When I started to go to classes, in junior high school, I was not aware of anything. I did not even know any English. I remember that my friends used to laugh at me and thought I was an ignorant person. I was put with the students who could speak English very well. Other students that are like me who did not speak English were Spanish; also the area that I live in is Spanish dominated. So the other students who are in similar situations that I was (could not speak English) were given the classes in Spanish so they could learn English without difficulty. And I was the one who had to really struggle very hard; also I could not make so many friends because of my poor English.

My teachers started to tell me that I should start watching more TV so I could learn English faster and I would able to improve my English. I started to watch C-SPAN because that was the only channel that interested the most. Mostly I used to watch Washington Journal in the beginning. Today I am in college and I am so interested in politics and aware of world issues around the world because of different speeches and programs I watched on C-SPAN and was so much motivated that I decided to run in student government association in my college. I finally won the election and was elected as a senator and then later I won the vice-president position in student government. Now I am the president of student government association and a delegate in university student senate.
