Using the American President Series, Photo Gallery and other C-SPAN info (presidential poster gift & book I ordered title "Who’s Buried in Grant’s Tomb?”) my students and I created a unit titled “FROM THE GRAVE: A LOOK AT THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTS." Students made a life-size replica of their assigned president’s grave and researched their president using your website gallery and the videos on their presidents. The students dressed as how they thought their president would look coming back from the grave and held a prop representing them. With angel wings they arose from their replica graves and shared about their president in character as the president retelling info they learned from their involvement with their presidents. This was far better than the traditional written president report. Class members learned from each other in a fun and interesting way incorporating drama. Everyone was involved regardless of academic level. The interest level was high and I had 100% participation. My limited English students loved watching the series on their presidents and students made positive comments -“This is so much fun!” “I like being Calvin Coolidge- I was shy like him at first but now I feel good.” I began dismissing students to recess by their president’s name instead of their real names. We lined up in presidential order and anytime anything was mentioned about presidents or the names of presidents appeared in something we were doing the student with that president was acknowledged. C-SPAN enhanced knowledge and triggered creativity with my students.
