NOW AND THEN

From humble beginnings in the segregated South, I earned three degrees and had a successful career in the helping professions and in education. Also my background includes involvement in civil rights for African-Americans, women, the physically challenged and others.

Something has always spurred me on to help others through a myriad of community programs.

At age 69, I relocated back to my home state. Having been an activist for so long, I wondered, could I retire like normal people - to church socials, coffee clubs and telephone gossip?

A favorite pastime was watching C-SPAN historians and authors discuss their books which opened the door of history. C-SPAN stimulated me to action.

Reflecting on my former students and their limited knowledge of history and basic writing skills, I created a FREE creative writing course with a history base. Classes opened to the public the winter of 1999 with 23 students enrolled; 2000 with 26 students; 2001 with 32 students and this fall with 52 students.

My students have ranged in ages from 16-80 years. Some travel 50 miles each way to attend Saturday classes held at our public library. We have no funding except a few dollars I can spare from my "fixed" income.

With me, some things haven't changed in retirement. Creating and teaching the history-based creative writing class is my way of giving something back.
