C-SPAN 25TH ANNIVERSARY STORY WINNERS

Huy Q. Dang
San Jose, California

In 1999 C-SPAN ran a year-long series that focused on the American presidency and the forty-one men who occupied it. Ever since watching the program I became fascinated with presidential history. In fact, I read everything I could find on American presidents. My favorite nonfiction book is Paul Nagel's "John Quincy Adams: A Public Life, A Private Life" (1997).

The program gave me a deep understanding of America's past and encouraged me to share my love of history with someone who would appreciate its relevance.

My sister Lilian was only six years old at the time and had just started second grade. I realized that the best way to help a person develop his or her interest in history was through early exposure. So each night I read to Lilian a few pages from a children's book on American presidents just to help her develop a life-long fondness for American history. She loved it so much that she began to read all books related to presidents.

Now nine years old, Lilian can recite in order the names of all U.S. presidents and mention at least one achievement or failure in each administration. When a neighbor said that Lincoln was the first president since William Henry Harrison to die in office, she quickly corrected him that that honor belonged to Zachary Taylor, the nation's twelfth president, who died in early 1850s.
