C-SPAN 25TH ANNIVERSARY STORY WINNERS

Greg Cooper
Newfield, New York
Cable Company: Time Warner

My C-SPAN story begins several years ago as I flipped through the cable channels and saw Senator JC Watts speaking, afterwhich I became glued to the TV. I remember his talking about what he felt about being a black republican, but wanting to be noted as someone who stands for the people. I remember his speaking about disagreeing with some of his political allies on issues. I also remember your coverage of a forum regarding music and the media, topics which included the debate on censorship of music and possible music rating system much like movie ratings are presently done. These 2 stood out (as well as the million man march) as topics that I used for group sessions at my place of employment (New York State Office of Children and Family Services-MacCormick Secure Center) which houses juveniles 14-20 years old who have committed adult crimes. C-SPAN has allowed me to see and to convey the "other side of the world" to these young men, which has created many intellectual conversations as a result--a side that myself and these young men would have not known otherwise. Your programming has opened myself and the residents of MacCormick who have been part of these sessions up to a new way of thinking.Your programming takes us to places we rarely see. Thank you...
