C-SPAN 25TH ANNIVERSARY STORY WINNERS

Zi-Qiang Chen
Apex, North Carolina
Cable Company: Time Warner

I was born in Tibet and grew up in ragged Gobi adjacent to Mongolia. I came to the United States to study the Rocky Mountain geology and Gulf of Mexico coastal sedimentology. Like most of my fellow foreign students from Asia, I almost single-minded engaged myself in the field of science I studied, hardly paddling any waters in English literature or creative writing. Not until about two years ago when I discovered the breath-taking beauty, breadth and dimension of C-SPAN, immediately I became a diehard viewer of your programs, such as "American Writers" and "Booknotes." Then I began to pour my feelings into words, believe or not, into English words. Early this year (2003), my poem "I Have A Buddhist Mother" won the North Carolina influential newspaper Independent 2003 poetry contest, to which I owe C-SPAN a 365-lb, fat-&-sugar-saturated THANK YOU!… Since then I have been asked to do poetry reading and other things locally in my community in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle of North Carolina, I have received hundreds of letters/emails from people all over the country and the world.

I want to toss over my sandy but warm appreciation to you.

Thank you, C-SPAN!
