C-SPAN 25TH ANNIVERSARY STORY WINNERS

Roberta Brooks
Chewelah, Washington
Cable Company: Charter Communications

Five years ago I heard Slade Gorton on the Senate floor telling about a project initialed in East Wenatchee based on Tom Brokaw's book "The Greatest Generation Speaks." Senator Gorton spoke enthusiastically of the work. A great deal of publicity came about from the project.

I thought if East Wenatchee could do it, why not our little town that desperately needed publicity? I contacted Mrs. Agnew of East Wenatchee and she sent me a great deal of information. Through the American Legion and the high school, Mrs. Sherri Frizzell decided to take on the project. This consisted of names of local people who had served in some capacity during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The students set up appointments and went to the homes of the people willing to talk to them. The stories were taped, transcribed and edited, then taken back to the people who had responded to see if there was anything more they wanted to add or change. The result was a book that was just everything we had hoped for. Young and old have met together for a once in lifetime connection. The writing class knew nothing about what war could do to an individual. The people who told their stories discovered they could now share this information with their families.

We are now on our 5th book. Chewelah is still in need of something to give it a lift. Senator Gorton didn't even bother to mention our efforts. This project actually changed high school curricula making oral history a part of the education system.

The C-SPAN bus up here would be one of the big events that ever happened here in our little town that tries so hard, but has so little.
