National Press Club luncheon speeches begin to appear on C-SPAN. First speaker: Federal Reserve Board Chairman, Paul Volcker.
 
May 20
C-SPAN received ACE Award for Distinguished Service.
 
October 7
C-SPAN adds LIVE viewer call-ins to program schedule, providing viewers with direct access to public policy makers. First call-in guests included: Pat Gushman, Tack Nail, Don West and Mike Kelley.
 
October 17
First federal agency hearing is carried on the network: FCC hearing on matters relating to the elections.
 
November
C-SPAN's first foray into a presidential campaign chalks up 175 hours of coverage.
 
1981
 
January 6
C-SPAN adds gavel-to-gavel coverage of congressional hearings to program schedule. The first hearing is the Senate Committee Confirmation of Secretary of Interior-designate, James Watt.
 
April 1
C-SPAN begins regular program schedule: eight hours a day, seven days a week.
 
May 31
C-SPAN wins two ACE Awards for election-related coverage.
 
December 16
The White House begins receiving C-SPAN.
