C-SPAN is added to the U.S. Senate's channel line-up.
 
June 2
C-SPAN 2 airs live proceedings of the U.S. Senate during television test period.
 
July 29
Senate votes in favor of permanent televised coverage of its proceedings.

January 5
C-SPAN 2 programming expands to 24-hours-a-day.

"Road to the White House" series begins which is a weekly look at the field of contenders for the '88 election.
 
July
The network launches "C-SPAN in the Classroom" program and hosts its first professors' seminar.
 
September
C-SPAN opens archives at Purdue University.
 
1988
 
July
C-SPAN publishes America's Town Hall-profiles of some of the network's viewers from all 50 states.

 
November 9
USIA transmits C-SPAN to 90 countries via WORLDNET, the first global satellite television network.
 
November 22
C-SPAN inaugurates international telecasts with Queen Elizabeth II's speech to the State Opening of Parliament.
