The existence of the White House taping system was first made public during the testimony of former presidential aide Alexander Butterfield before the Senate Watergate committee in July 1973. Recording stopped soon afterward, but the equipment was not removed until after President Nixon left office in August 1974.

On this day in May 1972, Governor George Wallace (D-AL) was shot in Laurel, Maryland, while campaigning in his second bid for the U.S. Presidency. Wallace was left paralyzed by the bullet from would-be assassin, Arthur Bremer. Wallace was a noted opponent of desegregation in the South. President Richard M. Nixon calls Wallace's wife and others regarding the assassination attempt.
