 NIXON WHITE HOUSE PHONE CALLS

HISTORY OF THE NIXON WHITE HOUSE TAPES
from the National Archives and Records Administration >>

On July 11, the National Archives and the Richard Nixon Presidential Library released the latest batch of Nixon White House Tapes. These secretly-recorded telephone conversations cover the period from November 3 to November 19, 1972. To date, the Nixon Presidential Materials staff has reviewed and opened approximately 1,684 hours of the complete conversations from the Nixon White House Tapes for public access.

The Nixon White House Tapes consist of approximately 3700 hours of recordings containing approximately 2800 hours of recorded conversations between President Nixon, his staff, and visitors at locations in the White House and Camp David. These recordings were produced surreptiously, without the knowledge of most of the participants.

The existence of the White House taping system was first made public during the testimony of former presidential aide Alexander Butterfield before the Senate Watergate committee in July 1973. Recording stopped soon afterward, but the equipment was not removed until after President Nixon left office in August 1974.
