TRUMAN LIBRARY PAUL NITZE INTERVIEWS

For more than 40 years, Paul Nitze was one of the chief architects of U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union. He was widely recognized as one of the world's leading arms control experts. From the first three weeks in March, hear portions of a series of 1975 oral history interviews with Paul Nitze conducted by Richard McKinzie for the Harry Truman Presidential Library.
 
 
PAUL NITZE INTERVIEW - PART ONE
In part one, Nitze talks about traveling to Japan and heading a survey of the effects of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He also discusses post-war missions of American armed forces, the Office of International Trade Policy, and the State Department Policy Planning Staff.

PAUL NITZE INTERVIEW - PART TWO
In part two, Nitze discusses the origins of NSC-68, a secret National Security Council document he authored which provided the strategic outline for increased U.S. expenditures to counter the perceived threat of Soviet armament. Nitze also talks about his work with the Joint Strategic Survey Committee, nuclear war strategy, and deals with the question of what to do in case of war with the U.S.S.R.
